Bobby – Service Dog in Training

Bobby in his training vest

The difference between receiving a trained service dog when they are over 2 years old and having a puppy that you train yourself with the assistance of a trainer:

Bobby doesn’t know that Mummy’s disabilities are different. He doesn’t know anything about walking on leash with a walking person because he knows Mummy has some big thing she sits in to go for a walk. He sleeps through an alarm clock that vibrates the whole bed as Mummy continually hits snooze for 20 minutes every morning. He doesn’t know that it’s different to be asked to sit while Mummy slides out of that big thing to clean up when he’s done his business.

Bobby doesn’t know that other people just talk with their voices but Mummy uses her voice and her hands, even though her words won’t sound like other people who talk to him.

Raising a puppy to be a service dog means that he is learning that everything other people see as a disability, are just normal things about Mummy.

If he needs something, he comes to Mummy to let me know. He goes to my chair to show me that he needs to go outside to empty his plumbing. He sits down and waits for the magic door to open so he can leave the apartment. He knows the sound of my clicker that opens the door and moves to the side of my chair because the magic door will open and then he waits for Mummy to go through the door and he follows.

He stops a few feet from the door when we get home and sits to wait for the magic door to open again. He sits in front of Mummy to get his leash off.

These things are normal for Bobby. He doesn’t have to learn when he’s older what a power chair is or why it’s important to stay a distance away from it when it moves (no Mummy hasn’t run him over!)

What my other service dogs learnt later after spending a year with someone who could use their legs to walk and run with them, Bobby is learning how to do it next to my chair and boy, does he enjoy his running everyday.

Please share Bobby’s GoFundMe page. All money raised will be used only for Bobby.
