Inclusion in the Church – Part 8

Many Church buildings are structurally designed in a way that is representative of the Temple in Jerusalem. When we step back and look at how the building has been constructed, its architecture and furnishings, it is vital that we consider how this building, constructed in visual beauty has erected barriers for disabled people. Change only comes after acknowledging these barriers and seeking to improve inclusivity within the Church.
With structural, technical, and attitudinal accessibility, the Church is answering Jesus’ call to follow Him. When looking at accessibility, Church leaders and laypersons may wonder where they should start, what type of things are necessary for physical inclusion of disabled people in the Church. Organizations, workplaces, and websites have noted the basics for accessibility which is often called the “accessibility checklist.” This is an excellent place to start when creating an inclusive environment.
